Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society, pointed out that there is a strong link between someone having a normal weight throughout their lives and the effect that this has on dementia risk to them.
As a result, she advised: "A healthy diet with a variety of fruit and vegetables that enables a person to maintain a normal body weight is likely to reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure or heart disease."
Therefore, Dr Sorensen has urged barbecue chefs to cook up more fruit and vegetables which are full of antioxidants and vitamins, as this will help protect the brain.
Furthermore, oily fish can also aid the heart and blood vessels, as they are packed with fatty acids, so these should also be considered on a BBQ party menu.
The advice follows on from a study by Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, which suggested that the risk of dementia is increased for those in mid-age who are overweight and obese.
